Persuasive Research-based Essay
 

Your task: Write a formal persuasive essay to convince the reader that a specific celebrity or famous person should be chosen to be the graduation speaker at College of Marin. Use the criteria below to explain how this person is a strong candidate and be sure to use research/sources to support your argument.

April 2016: Caitlin Rolston offered this example: Berta Cáceres. Cáceres won a Goldman Environmental Prize in 2015. Here is her acceptance speech. In March 2016 Cáceres was murdered for standing up for the environment and human rights. Watch a tribute to her from this year's Goldman Prize Ceremony in San Francisco

Criteria for an effective College of Marin graduation speaker:
  • Someone that community college students can relate to, who shows an understanding of students’ experiences in school and in life;
  • Able to be genuinely inspiring and be realistic about what it takes to succeed;
  • Able to communicate respectfully to students and their families;
  • Able to be humorous/memorable/interesting/entertaining while delivering a meaningful message.
