Magazine Review Assignment

Welcome! This guide will help you with your research paper. From Professor Bellisimo's syllabus: "A typed 6 to 8 page research paper: The research paper is an investigation of a political magazine or a magazine that deals with political issues. I will hand out a list of possible magazines to choose from and we will discuss them in class. An explanation of the assignment is attached to this syllabus. The research paper is due on Monday November 16th. The paper counts as 1/3 of your grade. We will discuss this assignment further in class."

Your assignment is to investigate a political magazine or a magazine that deals with political issues. A list of possible magazines is included on this guide. The paper should include:

a)  An overview of the magazine:
  • statement about major themes of the magazine
  • the topics it usually covers
  • its circulation, style, editors, and writing staff
  • the type of people (demographically and politically) who one would expect to read the magazine

b)  The political bias of the magazine and its writers – what is the prevailing point of view or dominant opinion about government and government issues. It is essential that you include examples when describing a magazine’s bias.

c)  A review of two topics covered over several years in the magazine. As an example, review how Mother Jones has covered the issue of abortion rights and the issue of equal pay over the past ten years – or in its first year of publication and now. You can select two topics that interest you or ones that seem to dominate the magazine. You should go back at least ten years and review how the two topics have been covered on more than three occasions over that time period. For comparison, you can also look at the same topics as they are covered in another publication with a different bias.

d)  Finally, a summary conclusion that gives your opinion of the magazine and the issues it covers.

The magazine review should be 6-8 pages. You can organize your paper into different sections using the headings above.
